LAKENHEATH, U.K. - RAF Lakenheath’s Air Force Repair Enhancement Program officially re-opened for business at their new facility during a ribbon-cutting ceremony June 4.

“Before, we basically worked out of a storage-shed warehouse type of building without any running water to say the least,” said Tech. Sgt. Christopher Butigieg, 48th Maintenance Group AFREP manager. “This new building really meets our needs because we have a larger maintenance area, a bathroom, running water and storage areas.”

The AFREP saves resources and American tax dollars by repairing items that are no longer made or available through normal channels.

“It’s important for the base to know about the AFREP so we can generate or save the base money, especially during these hard economic times,” said Butigieg.

The program allows used equipment that would otherwise be disposed of to be returned to the supply system for future applications. Money saved from recycling aircraft parts is passed on to the installation to use for funding base improvements and quality of life projects.

“We just recently provided the military training flight with new desks,” said Butigieg, a native of Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

According to Butigieg, RAF Lakenheath’s AFREP is number one across U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Pacific Air Forces.

Dealing with two aspects of repair - cost avoidance and cost savings - the AFREP generates a profit for the Air Force by fixing and sending parts back into the Air Force supply system. It also saves the Air Force money in cost avoidance fees by repairing items at a cheaper price than if they were sent elsewhere.

“As far as figures, this past fiscal year we generated $2.5 million and we saved about $1 million in cost avoidance,” said Butigieg.

Aircraft parts to printers, if it’s electronic or mechanical, chances are the AFREP can fix it.

“I am very proud of the service that this section does,” said Col. Matthew Cox, 48th MXG commander. “You guys generated over $2.5 million last year that went straight back into our own budget for the sustainment of quality of life projects and I can’t thank you enough for that and this new building will ensure that we continue to provide that fantastic support.”

The AFREP supports all wing and base agencies with repair of electronics, mechanical systems and assets, to find out more information on the AFREP stop by at their new location building 1232 or call DSN: 226-6177.
