FORT McCOY, Wis. – “I come from a military family so I knew I wanted to be in the military since I was 5 years old,” said Spc. Christopher Delk, representing the 378th Military Intelligence Battalion, Fort Sheridan, Ill., during the 2013 Army Reserve Best Warrior competition at Fort McCoy, Wis.

Military service is a tradition in the young specialist’s family. Having a great-grandfather and grandfather who served, his father serving as a master sergeant in the U.S. Army and a younger brother who just enlisted definitely gives Delk the highest level of motivation he needs to be successful during the four-day competition.

“My family is all very proud of me being in this competition, and support me in everything I do both in the military and with school,” Delk said.

Delk a native of Highland Park, Ill., is also a full-time student at Illinois State University, studying to get his Bachelors of Science degree in Information Technology Security. He has also been participating in the Reserve Officer Training Corps program in school to make a determination if he wants to join to help in possibly becoming an officer in the Army later in his career. His new degree would also help him in his Army Reserve job of a military intelligence signal analyst.

“Being a reserve soldier comes with the struggle of balancing school full-time and my Army commitment,” Delk said. “When you are doing a challenge like this and training for your military occupational specialty, you have to juggle your time the best you can. I do two annual training events every year. It can get overwhelming and sometimes hard to do.”

After being approached by his supervisors about the Best Warrior competition, Delk was encouraged to make his company proud. Delk said he wanted to represent his company and felt it would be a great chance to test himself and his skills.

“I try my best but without my noncommissioned officers and company commander I wouldn’t be where I am now, so I would like to thank my supervisors for doing all they have done to help get me to this point with extra training and time,” Delk said. “It has all been very helpful and I am hoping I can do my best to make them proud.”

With all Delk has going on, he enjoys his time off doing photography and taking his modified Jeep out in the back woods as a means of decompressing.

“I think of my dad as my hero, he raised me since I was little and he has been in the Army,” Delk said emotionally. “He lives the Army Values everyday and I can see he represents all those values on how he leads his soldiers and treats other people. I always looked up to him and I’m happy he is still around to see me in this competition. I want to follow in his footsteps.”

Striving to continue the legacy of the military in his family, Delk is also determined to make all those who support and guide him proud of his accomplishments during the 2013 Army Reserve Best Warrior competition.
