FORT KNOX, Ky. — When the soldiers of 6th Squadron, 4th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, aren’t patrolling the streets of Northern Afghanistan they can be found honing their skills and getting back to the basics.

On June 22, the Task Force Raider soldiers put themselves through a number of training scenarios to include casualty evacuations, skill level one battle drills, a physical endurance test and a nighttime live fire exercise.

While the acts of violence in Regional Command North remain minimal, Sgt. Joshua Johnson said this training is important and plays an important role in assuring each soldier is proficient and that they can react accordingly if a serious situation does arise.

The Task Force Raider noncommissioned officers also put an emphasis on getting Soldiers out of their comfort zone.

If you take someone out of their comfort zone, such as taking a right-handed shooter and having them try to shoot left-handed, you will increase their confidence,” said Sgt. Kevin Sharp, section leader for Apache Troop, 6th Squadron., 4th Cavalry Regiment. “The new found confidence will be important.”

The Cavalrymen are using their ‘new found’ confidence to help them increase proficiency among themselves as well as their Afghan counterparts as they continue to advise and assist Afghan National Security Forces while also maintaining standards across the board.

“I hold my guys to a really high standard and I keep my personal standard high and instill it in them; Always be prepared,” said Sharp. “You don’t know what is going to happen, when it will happen, and where it will happen, you just need to be ready to react when the time comes.”

While their mission in Afghanistan continues to evolve, it is unknown if and when the time will come for the Soldiers to put their training to the test but the one thing that is certain is the Raider soldiers will continue to perfect their skills while also maintaining a supportive presence on the streets of Afghanistan, assisting Afghan forces and leading the charge for retrograde operations in the area.
