SHAW AIR FORCE BASE, S.C. - Do you have a positive appearance, attitude and actions? Are you a staff sergeant or below? Would you like to be noticed for your positive appearance?

Well today maybe your day to be considered for a J.J. Pollock award nomination.

Each month, supervisors can nominate their Airmen by creating packages to be sent to their chief and from there the chief master sergeants across Shaw submit the names of outstanding troops. The four Chief panel then proceeds to review the award packages for the final selection of two base wide winners.

From there several members of the Chiefs group will show up to the winners workplace and present the individual with a coin and the award.

The award criteria are not limited to what Airmen accomplish during their duty hours; volunteer work is also considered.

The award allows the Shaw Community Chiefs another opportunity to recognize junior enlisted personnel who consistently demonstrate outstanding duty performance, present an exceptional personal appearance and professional and congenial attitude.

Established at Ramstein Air Base, Germany, in 1993 as the “Sharp Award,” Chief Master Sgt. J.J. Pollock developed the award to recognize Airmen for their outstanding personal appearance and exemplary duty performance.

As Pollock transferred duty locations from Ramstein to Shaw he brought the Sharp award along with him, designating it as an award given out by the Chiefs group. After Pollock passed away in 1994, the Chiefs group changed the name of the award to the JJ Pollock Sharp Award.

One of Shaw’s recent recipients of the award was Staff Sgt. Lindsey Snook, 20th Comptroller Squadron quality assurance technician.

“I was extremely surprised, but very honored to be recognized by our top enlisted leadership”, said Snook.

So Airmen get a chance to see their recognition and the past winners there are currently two plaques located in the Carolina Skies Club of all the winners from January 2003 to the present.

“We know there are a lot of hardworking Airmen here at Shaw doing great things and supporting our mission”, said Chief Master Sgt. Juanita Osby, 20th Comptroller Squadron superintendent. “With this award, we have another way to recognize them for their outstanding efforts and sharp image.”
