Recruiting Station New Jersey Announces Basilone Bowl Week

BRIDGEWATER, N.J. – In its first year, the Inaugural Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone Bowl celebrates academic excellence, proven physical fitness, and quality of character. The 2013 Basilone Bowl will commence June 28 at 5:30 p.m. and will be held in Bridgewater, N.J., at Bridgewater-Raritan High School/Basilone Field.

Basilone Bowl Week kicks-off on June 23 and runs through June 28. Approximately 80 of Somerset County’s elite football players will partake in team practice leading up to the game, led by high school coaches and local Marines to develop skills not only important to football, but throughout life, such as leadership, self-confidence and teamwork.

During team practices, local Marines will lead intense, military-style physical fitness warm-up drills and will close practice with seminars that instill pride, emphasize teamwork, and discuss community responsibility. Further, media representatives will have an opportunity to visit with selected players, as well as the coaching staff and key members of the United States Marine Corps.

About Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone: Gunnery Sergeant John Basilone, of Raritan, New Jersey, was awarded the Medal of Honor in recognition of his outstanding heroism at Guadalcanal. Later, during the Iwo Jima Campaign, he was killed in action on D-Day, February 19, 1945. This game has been launched as a tribute to the legacy of John “Manila John” Basilone and to honor the pride of the Somerset county community.
