PORT KLANG, Malaysia – Adm. Samuel J. Locklear III, commander, United States Pacific Command hosted a celebration ceremony on board the U.S. 7th Fleet flagship USS Blue Ridge (LCC 19) during a port visit in Port Klang, Malaysia, June 5, 2013.

During the celebration, Locklear spoke with Malaysian media representatives and 7th Fleet staff and had the unique opportunity to present letters of appointment to United States service academies for three young Malaysian Army, Navy and Air Force members to earn their college education in the United States

“It is important to us to be able to offer to young men and women the opportunity to come study through our military institutions,” said Locklear. “It builds partnerships. It allows us to put together and build relationships that will last 40, 50 years and even longer into the future.”

Among the honored guests of the evening included Paul W. Jones, United States ambassador to Malaysia, Adm. Tan Sri Dato Abdul Aziz Jaafar, chief of Malaysian navy, and Tan Sri Dato Seri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim, chief minister of Selangor.

The visit was one of many stops Locklear made during his time in the Indo-Asia-Pacific region to speak with U.S. and allied nation leadership, including U.S. 7th Fleet Commander Vice Adm. Scott H. Swift, who was also in attendance.

Blue Ridge and embarked 7th Fleet staff are currently on patrol operating forward and building maritime partnerships while conducting security and stability operations.
