INDIANAPOLIS – Nine soldiers from Detachment 5, European Command, Joint Analysis Center, United States Army Reserve Element, along with two Reserve Officer Training Corps cadets, raised $4,420.00 for the Wounded Warrior Project. This small subordinate detachment of the Military Intelligence Readiness Command collected donations from $25 to $100 with the promise to complete the OneAmerica 500 Festival Mini-Marathon 13.1-mile race May 4, 2013.
The soldiers completed the event as a team in three hours, 58 minutes, each carrying 40-pound packs while wearing the Army Combat Uniform.
Lt. Col. Douglas Johnson, the detachment commander, said, “As far as we know, we are the first military unit in the history of the race to run with it in uniform, boots and a rucksack.”
The 500 Festival is the nation’s largest half marathon, hosting as many 35,000 participants every year. The Wounded Warrior Project is a charity under the 501(c)(3) Internal Revenue Code which supports injured service members.
