CAMP JOHNSON, N.C. - Marines at the Staff Noncommissioned Officer Academy raised $520 through the Directors Run, a three-mile fun run held at the end of the school’s course cycles, for the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society on the final week of their fund drive April 18.

The school raised money for the organization by selling of T-Shirts and through donations.

Master Sgt. Amber Beegle, the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society coordinator with the school, led the effort. She chose the director’s run because it is the only event involving students of all course levels within the school.

Beegle designed and commissioned shirts she hoped Marines would want to wear frequently and sold them at cheaper prices than similar products. She donated all profits to the organization.

The powder blue shirts featured the Navy Marine Corps Relief Society’s logo on the front and the silhouette of a man running with the words “I ran to take care of our own,” on the back.

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society is an organization, sponsored by the Department of Defense, that provides financial assistance and counseling along with services such as workshops for Marines, sailors and eligible family members and nurses.

“It’s an organization that takes care of Marines and their families so a lot of Marines felt like (supporting the fun run was) a way to take care of our own,” said Beegle.

It’s not the only way the academy has provided for charitable organizations. The members of the school recently participated in a physical fitness challenge, which raised $1015 overall for St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. After the Director’s Run, they also held a bake sale to support the Semper Fi Fund.

“The staff here is like family,” said Beegle “They all want to help the community.”

The academy instructs more than 5,000 students a year. Corporals through gunnery sergeants go to the school to learn how to be more effective leaders.

The Navy Marine Corps Relief Society has provided assistance to Marines and sailors since 1904. Last year it provided $64 million in assistance and services to more than 61,000 Marines, sailors and their families according to a recent Marine Corps-wide message.
