SAN DIEGO - Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center Pacific employee Brian Suh was recognized by the Federal Laboratory Consortium with its Technology Transfer Representative of the Year Award. The award was presented on May 13 by SSC Pacific Commanding Officer Capt. Joe Beel and SSC Pacific Executive Director Carmela Keeney in a ceremony held at SSC Pacific.

“This is a prestigious award with important meaning behind it,” said Beel. “Technology Transfer is critical to SSC Pacific, allowing us to distinguish ourselves and share our knowledge and technologies with universities, governmental organizations, and the private sector.”

The FLC Representative of the Year Award recognizes the most significant contribution to the FLC in the past year. The FLC is the nationwide network of federal laboratories that provides the forum to develop strategies and opportunities for linking laboratory technologies and expertise with the marketplace. The National Security Agency, Environmental Protection Agency, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration are a few of the federal organizations whose laboratories are also part of the FLC.

“It’s important to highlight that this award reaches across all federal government laboratories, not just the Navy or the Department of Defense,” said Keeney.

Suh has been the director of SSC Pacific’s Technology Transfer (T2) Office at SSC Pacific since December 2010. Under his leadership the T2 Office has facilitated 12 cooperative research and development agreements, along with 16 limited purpose CRADAs which, combined, obligated more than $855,000 in funding to SSC Pacific.

He is directly responsible for $4 million in royalties due to SSC Pacific from ten executed patent license agreements. In addition, he is the process owner of an executive Lean Six Sigma team review of SSC Pacific’s CRADA process to make it as efficient and effective as possible.

Suh executed the first partnership intermediary agreement at SSC Pacific, providing a vital link with the San Diego State University Research Foundation in support of the San Diego Advanced Defense Technologies regional cluster.

He also serves as a SSC Pacific’s military liaison on the SDADT executive board, working with industry and academic leaders to identify collaboration opportunities in support of local economic development, and furthering the SSC Pacific research and development mission.

“I’m very proud to be receiving this award,” said Suh. “Technology Transfer provides a path for SSC Pacific’s scientists, engineers and patent producers to transfer their innovations to industry for collaboration and commercialization where it can ultimately transition to support the warfighter.”
