MAIDAN WARDAK PROVINCE, Afghanistan – The Afghan National Army special forces hosted a transfer of authority ceremony to thank U.S. special forces for their dedicated contributions to security and to mark the assumption of Afghan forces’ control of security in Nerkh district, Maidan Wardak province, March 30.

Earlier this month, President Karzai and Ministry of Interior officials decided the ANASF are independently capable of managing increases in security, governance and development throughout the province.

During the ceremony, ANASF company commander Maj. Qismat Katawazei thanked the U.S. special forces for their guidance and advice during counterinsurgency operations. He spoke about current issues of security and about his unit’s determination to succeed in providing security for the residents of Nerkh district.

“This transition process is a natural process. The transition from coalition force to Afghan-led security is occurring all over the country. We are proud that the Afghan forces are beginning to lead the way in the security of our villages and the entire nation.”

Sgt. 1st Class Sefatullah Mujahid, an ANASF team sergeant, concluded the ceremony expressing great pride in his unit’s capabilities and readiness to serve and protect the people of Nerkh district.

“Our personnel have received some of the best tactical training possible by international standards. We are well equipped and we will fight against our enemies using everything we know, as best as we can.”

Afghan National Army commandos are an elite group whose main purpose is to conduct high-risk missions that disrupt insurgent networks. Commando counterinsurgency missions enable conditions for improved security, governance, and development.
