HONOLULU - Governor-General of Australia Quentin Bryce participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Monday, April 1. The official party presenting the wreath included Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, Maj. Gen. Anthony Crutchfield, chief of staff, U.S. Pacific Command and Maj. Gen. Richard Burr, Australian army, U.S. Army Pacific deputy commanding general of operations.

“How honored I am to be here at this sacred place, to honor the service and the sacrifice of American defense personnel,” said Bryce. “We share a very special bond, a very strong alliance and we understand how much, this very significant memorial means to your country as it does to ours.”

Following the wreath presentation, Bryce signed the guest log, where her name will be with U.S. presidents, international heads of state, emperors and other dignitaries. After completion of the ceremony, she visited with Australian military members working here and wrapped up her visit to National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific with a viewing of the map galleries.

“Our strong bonds were forged in wartime,” she continued. “During World War II, where we served together in very many battles lost many of our defense personnel, it’s a wonderful thing for me to be there to pay tribute to that friendship, that alliance. It’s a very important thing to all of us as Australians, I’m deeply honored to be here and to be sharing this occasion of commemoration.”

Her Excellency Bryce is the first female to hold the office of Australia governor-general. Appointed by Queen Elizabeth II, she assumed office in September of 2008 and served previously as the governor of Queensland.
