USS Carter Hall promotes steps to quit tobacco

AT SEA – The amphibious dock landing ship USS Carter Hall (LSD 50) kicked off a tobacco cessation program for sailors and Marines on March 25.

Tobacco cessation is a program to help educate service members about the types of nicotine addictions, the affects of prolonged nicotine use and the types of treatments available to help them quit.

“This program offers information, counseling and treatment for sailors and Marines who are addicted to tobacco products,” said Lt. Mathew Roberts, Carter Hall’s dental officer. “We organize classes for anyone to attend and help the individual to quit either smoking or the use of smokeless tobacco products.”

Carter Hall has been a strong advocate of the tobacco cessation program for more than five years and has helped over 50 sailors and Marines a year to quit tobacco use.

“My goal is to be tobacco free,” said Yeoman 2nd Class Michael Franklin. “I saw posters around the ship and finally decided to go to one of the classes and I’m glad that I did.”

Service members have different reasons for wanting to quit tobacco, such as avoiding the long-term health affects and negative image perception that goes along with tobacco.

“It’s just a bad habit,” said Yeoman 3rd Class Brandin Lane. “It’s very difficult to quit, and the tobacco cessation program helps to take steps toward quitting and stay away from tobacco.”

“If you have ever thought of quitting, even a little, then I would suggest giving it a shot,” said Franklin.

Carter Hall is deployed as part of the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group with embarked Marines from the 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit, which is on a scheduled deployment in support of maritime security operations and theater security cooperation efforts in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility (AOR).
