FORT BLISS, Texas - Soldiers, family members and citizens of El Paso gathered to participate in the 2nd Annual St. Patrick’s Day Festival at the promenade area outside Shamrock’s Irish Pub in Freedom Crossing here March 16 and 17.

This year, the event expanded to feature a two-day festival complete with Irish food, live entertainment, family activities and parties on the patios of Freedom Crossing businesses.

Leprechaun characters danced with children in the streets to the music played from the bagpipes by men and women wearing kilts. Crowds of festival goers sporting green were given Irish hats and green beaded necklaces, and had the opportunity to get face paintings provided by Freedom Crossing at Fort Bliss.

“It was amazing to see all the Irish themes, live Irish music and green beer,” said Dayle Means, a civilian visiting from W. Va.

St. Patrick’s Day also marked the 2nd year anniversary of Shamrocks Irish Pub, said Tim McCoy, the marketing director of Freedom Crossing, Fort Bliss.

The pub hosted a countdown at midnight Saturday to celebrate its anniversary and the start of St. Patrick’s Day.

“It is the only authentic Irish pub located in El Paso,” said McCoy. “We'd like to thank the Fort Bliss and El Paso communities for continuing to make the festival a wonderful event said McCoy.

“The street festival gave us an opportunity to embrace our Irish heritage,” said 2nd Lt. Jake Sliter, registered nurse, William Beaumont Army Medical Center.
