SEATTLE - The United States Marine Corps will partner with the city of Seattle, Wash., to bring Marine Week to the Emerald City Aug. 5-11. Marine Week is a celebration of community, country and Corps, and provides the unique experience to directly connect the American public and their Marines.

“It’s an honor to hold Marine Week 2013 in the abundant and beautiful city of Seattle,” said Lt. Gen. Steven A. Hummer, commander of Marine Forces Reserve and Commander, Marine Forces North. “This year we will demonstrate the great versatility of the Marine Corps by featuring our sustainable energy and environmental compliance initiatives, in addition to our state-of-the-art equipment and battlefield technology. Most importantly, Marine Week is an opportunity to share our rich history, connect with the citizens of Seattle and all Americans, thank them for their support and demonstrate why the Marine Corps is America’s Expeditionary Force in Readiness.”

Seattleites will have the opportunity to climb aboard a variety of the Corps’ aircraft and ground equipment throughout the week at Seattle Center and during our one day events at Green Lake and Jefferson Parks. The people of Seattle will also be able to witness Marine Corps martial arts demonstrations and engage in Marine Corps physical fitness tests, while taking in the sights and sounds of the Silent Drill Platoon and Marine Corps Band. Throughout the week, Marines will be lending a hand to local communities through community service projects, such as neighborhood clean-ups, park restorations and housing rebuilds. The week will culminate with a simulated combat demonstration at Stan Sayres Park, as the Marines highlight their unique capabilities to fight our country’s battles in the air, on the land and at sea.

“We are honored to host Marine Week 2013,” said Mayor Mike McGinn. “It is going to be a good opportunity for the people of Seattle to interact with our Marines and show our appreciation for those who serve and protect our country.”

Free and open to the public, all Marine Week events will honor and recognize Marines, including many from northwest Washington, for their service and sacrifice. The Seattle community is served locally by the 4th Landing Support Battalion located at Joint Base Lewis McChord in
Tacoma, Wash. The battalion currently has 1,364 active duty and reserve Marines assigned and has supported World War II, Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom in Iraq and Afghanistan from 2003-2009. During OIF and OEF,
the Unit was awarded the Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal and Global War on Terrorism Service Medal for their service.
