FORT HOOD, Texas -- The Fort Hood Better Opportunity for Single Soldiers program coordinated an income generating activity selling and delivering Valentine’s Day grams around post Feb. 14.

The unit BOSS representatives were responsible for promoting and distributing three different gift options. Buyers had the choice of a single rose, three roses or a dozen roses combined with a card and a box of chocolates.

The main goal is to grant all unit BOSS representatives here the opportunity to become more actively engaged with their fellow service members, said Sgt. Sonya Legaspi, Fort Hood BOSS president. It promotes the program, and gets the reps more involved.

The proceeds from the Valentine’s Day grams are going to assist single service members to partake in more activities.

Soldiers will be more likely to attend events if BOSS is able to lower the cost to them, said Spc. Rickey Hicks, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, brigade BOSS representative. The objective is to promote more participation by raising money for future events.

They were able to accomplish this goal and spread Valentine’s Day cheer.

“I tried to put a lot of enthusiasm into this,” said Spc. Sean Aakre, HHC, 4th BCT, 1st Cav. Div., assistant BOSS representative. “I feel motivated and excited to make people happy. The more extravagant you make a delivery, the more memorable the moment is.”

One recipient was moved to tears.

“You just made me cry,” Sgt. Michelle Figueroa, HHC, 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 1st Cav. Div., noncommissioned officer in charge of personnel, said after receiving her valentines. “I have goose bumps now!”

BOSS offers several occasions for soldiers to connect with others.
The program also provides single service member with children various activities to engage with other participants and family through community service, leisure and recreation.

“BOSS is a great program for single parents,” Hicks said. “It gives them and their kids family oriented activities to do together.”

There are a variety of upcoming events planned for next month, to include outdoor recreation, sporting events and a weekend trip to Corpus Christi, Texas, March 29 through 31, Legaspi said. There are also ongoing community outreach projects happening each month.

Members have the opportunity to volunteer at the Veterans of Foreign Wars in Harker Heights, Texas, the 1st Wednesday of every month, and the VFW in Temple the last Friday of every month.

Single soldiers are offered a variety of occasions to get out and interact with others and their community.

BOSS persistently makes an effort to reduce the cost of events for their participants by encouraging unit representatives to get involved and help generate funds to keep single soldiers active and engaged.
