JOINT BASE MCGUIRE-DIX-LAKEHURST, N.J. - Members of the 87th Communications Squadron implemented network port security to all computers on the Air Force network Feb. 1 - 13, 2013, here.
With this implementation, a computer’s media access control address will be matched with a specific local area network port in an effort to prevent unauthorized devices on the port usage.
“This basically means a computer is assigned to a network port and can’t move to another port unless coordinated ahead of time,” said Tech. Sgt. Maurice Vales, 87th CS Infrastructures Flight NCO in charge.
A network port will be disabled if a different MAC address is discovered in the LAN port according to the 87th CS Port Security Implementation SharePoint site.
Users must coordinate with their respective telecommunications officers if a computer needs to be moved from one LAN port to another to complete the required computer move request form located on the port security implementation SharePoint site.
This port security initiative is a Defense Information Security Agency requirement requiring all DOD networks to implement port security to enhance cyber security.
