FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Col. James R. Andrews assumed command of the 10th Combat Support Hospital during a Jan. 28 ceremony on Founders’ Field.
Andrews, who last served at the Northern Regional Medical Command, Fort Belvoir, Va., replaces Col. Michael L. Place.
The transfer of command featured the traditional passing of the unit colors from the outgoing commander to the ceremonial host, Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, and then to the incoming commander.
“Today is another historic day for the 4th Inf. Div., as we say farewell to one of our great command teams and welcome another,” Anderson said. “Col. Place is a dedicated leader, a total team player, in both this division and on this post. I would like to take some time and recognize him and reflect on just ... a few
of the (10th) Combat Support Hospital’s many accomplishments and contributions during his tenure.
“Place led the CSH to deploy with a multicomposition, widely dispersed medical task force that covered over one-third of Afghanistan,” Anderson said. “They partnered with eight international medical partners, to include working at the busiest
trauma hospital in theater, the United Kingdom’s Bastion Role 3 hospital in Helmand province, Afghanistan. They achieved an overall survival rate of 98 percent, so that tells you when you get hurt, you want these guys taking care of you.”
Place followed Anderson, welcoming Andrews and his family and
then commending his soldiers’ for their achievements.
“To the soldiers on the field, you look great out there, as you have every day since I took command,” Place said. “You’ve accomplished amazing things. I am humbled by your service, your professionalism and your dedication.”
Place will now attend the Senior Service College.
Andrews thanked Place and his family for their support to him and the soldiers of the 10th CSH, before addressing his new soldiers.
“To the soldiers, noncommissioned officers and officers assigned
and attached to the 10th Combat Support Hospital, I thank you for your continued commitment and dedication to the Army mission,” Andrews said. “Your individual and collective
missions are vital to the success of this command, to the success of the Army, and to our country’s ability to treat its wounded warriors on the battlefield,” he said.
Andrews has served as a platoon leader, company commander and the director of the Human Capital Management at the Office of The Surgeon General. His military awards include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and Defense Meritorious Service Medal.
