BOSTON - About 80 people turned out for a special event at Defense Contract Management Agency Boston celebrating the legacy of Martin Luther King, Jr., and the American civil rights movement. The event was planned by the contract management office’s Special Emphasis Program team of Timothy Culhane, Shirley Dopson and Catherine Soto.

Guest speaker Charles E. Walker, Jr., wove his remarks around the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 and King’s “I Have a Dream” speech, given a century later in 1963. Walker brought them full circle to today’s DCMA Policy Letter on Diversity and Inclusion, which he called “one of the most eloquent and impassioned” he has seen.

The SEP coordinators said they are honored to support DCMA Director Charlie E. Williams, Jr.’s, vision of diversity and inclusion.

“We are scheduling events for 2013 with the belief that before understanding between individuals comes, the road toward diversity takes getting to know the country’s history,” said Soto. “After knowing our foundations as a country, the daily challenge posed by diversity and inclusion in the workplace is getting to know co-workers and respecting each other by fostering awareness and appreciation toward individual differences.”

Walker received his law degree from Boston College Law School, and has a distinguished career in civil rights. He is a former chair of the Massachusetts Commission Against Discrimination, the state's chief civil rights enforcement agency, and is currently the chief administrative hearings officer for the Massachusetts Division of Professional Licensure. Walker is also an adjunct professor at the New England School of Law and host of The Heart of the Matter, a Boston-area television program.

A self-described “military brat,” Walker was born in Alaska to Charles E. Walker, Sr., a member of the Tuskegee 477th Bombardment Squadron, the famed Tuskegee Airmen.

The event was attended by agency personnel from DCMA Boston, DCMA Eastern Regional Command and Boston-based DCMA Centers.
