    II Marine Expeditionary Force

CAMP LEJEUNE, N.C. – Marines and sailors with Combat Logistics Regiment 27, 2nd Marine Logistics Group followed their new commanding officer through the streets here, Jan. 11.

Col. Gary F. Keim, the commanding officer of CLR-27, started the day with a 40-minute run in “boots and utes,” which is a variation of the Marine uniform that is used for physical training and worn during the Combat Fitness Test. It consists of utility trousers, boots and a green shirt.

When the regiment returned from the run to Soifert Field, a large field used for PT here, they found three large tires and three stretchers at separate ends of a coned off section on the field.

Each company and battalion chose three males and three females to participate in a series of short, but challenging exercises.

“It provides me with the opportunity to put physical examples in front of the rest of the regiment who are very fit and winners,” said Keim. “It really does pay to be a winner and to be the best or strive to be the best at something.”

At the sound of the colonel’s yell, the Marines rushed to get their tires approximately 100 yards. They were not allowed to roll the tires, only flip them. Once they got to the other end, one teammate had to get on a stretcher while the other two picked it up and scurried down the field to the finish line.

Headquarters Company’s male team and Service Company’s female team won the events and will receive a day off work, as promised by the commanding officer.

“The regiment is a better regiment than what I left in 2011,” said Keim. “We have gotten a little bit better everywhere.”

CLR-27 consists of five combat logistics battalions, which offer maintenance, supply and motor transportation teams. In addition, it has multiple companies including Headquarters, Service, Communications and Food Services. All of those pieces fit together to allow the regiment to logistically support Marine expeditionary brigades and Marine expeditionary units on the East Coast.

“CLR-27 provides direct support from afloat, and we’re the only regiment east of the Mississippi [River] that does that,” said Keim.

At the end of the PT session, Keim brought the service members together to talk about their mission and added a secondary portion.

“What is the underlying common denominator? What do we do all the time?” Keim asked. “We take care of each other and our families. [Operations] first, and our Marines and each other all the time.”
