SALT LAKE CITY - A deployment ceremony was held here in the Kenichi Uchida Reserve Center, Jan. 12, 2013, where families and friends said farewell to their deploying soldiers.

The more than 20 soldiers of the 889th Transportation Detachment are scheduled for a year-long mobilization to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The unit is deploying to Afghanistan to provide movement control support of personnel, supplies and equipment to support the drawdown of forces there, officials said.

“Your mission is an important one. What you will be doing is setting the ground work to send other soldiers home,” said Brig. Gen. I. Neal Black, commander of the 364th Expeditionary Sustainment Command, during his speech at the ceremony.

Among the ceremony's other distinguished guest speakers was U.S. Rep. Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, R-Calif., chairman of the Armed Services Committee. McKeon's nephew and granddaughter are both soldiers with the 96th Sustainment Brigade.

"It's great to come see troops ready to deploy," said McKeon. "(The Reserves) have been totally integrated with the active forces and are doing a great job."

"I am so thankful for all of you who are willing to put on the uniform," he said. "I thank you for your service."

The 889th’s soldiers will undergo post-mobilization training at Fort Hood, Texas, before heading to Afghanistan at a later date.
