    Story by Pfc. Maria Kappell

    69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade

FORT HOOD, Texas — On the morning of June 17, Soldiers from the 69th Air Defense Artillery Brigade made their last preparations in the mobile kitchen trailer to ready themselves for their upcoming inspections in the Philip A. Connelly Competition at their field site here.

69th ADA won the III Corps and Fort Hood Philip A. Connelly Award for the field category, and if the Soldiers do well with their inspections on June 17 in the FORSCOM Philip A. Connelly Competition, they will be nominated to compete at the Department of the Army Philip A. Connelly Competition level.

The results of the FORSCOM Philip A. Connelly Competition will be released in late July, and these scores will determine whether or not 69th ADA Bde. will compete in the DA Philip A. Connelly Competition that is yet to come in future months.

Philip A. Connelly was born in 1907. Throughout his career he strived to increase the morale and skill among military and civilian food service personnel. Connelly initiated food service competitions between all branches of the armed forces, and now, the Philip A. Connelly Competition is something that cooks throughout the services can look forward to being a part of.

The competition creates a scenario where food service specialists focus on improving military food service in Garrison and field environments and recognize Soldiers and units who have exceptional food service.

Six Soldiers from 69th ADA, lead by brigade food service Chief Warrant Officer 3 Timothy Hagans and Sergeant 1st Class Ramon Rodriguez, have been out in the field assembling training area 112 since mid-March, said Spc. Jean Bishop, a food service specialist from the Headquarters and Headquarters Battery of 69th ADA who is taking part in the competition.

69th ADA's Philip A. Connelly field site consists of several areas. Some of the main areas include an air conditioned dining tent, a mobile kitchen trailer, an administration tent, a ration storage tent and a garbage area.

Several other Soldiers throughout the brigade have been diligently working in the field to make sure that it was ready for presentation as well. From creating walkways, to hanging posters, 69th ADA Soldiers have gone all out to prepare for the competition.

The competition demands long hours from Soldiers who not only have to make the site ready for inspection but also have to study standard operating procedures and field manuals, Bishop said. It is also important for everyone to know everyone else's job, whether it be preparing the food, issuing rations, or working in the administration tent, he added.

The goal of 69th ADA food service is to provide the best service by the best Soldiers for the Soldiers in the brigade.
