    Story by Lt. John Fage

    U.S. Naval Forces Central Command / U.S. 5th Fleet

MANAMA, Bahrain - Members assigned to Expeditionary Strike Group Two, deployed to Naval Support Activity Bahrain, recently delivered several boxes of children's books, small toys and craft supplies to children at the Regional Institute for Active Learning School in Adliya, Bahrain last week.

"The nicest thing for me personally is the fact that someone far away who doesn't know anything about me has taken the time to make such a wonderful gesture. That means a lot," said Christine Gordon, the school's coordinator. "Not to mention the fact that all the kids (and their teachers) are going to get hours upon hours of enjoyment from those packages. It might have been a small gesture on their part, but it's as big as Mount Everest to me."

Cmdr. Bob Corrigan, assistant operations officer, ESG Two and resident of the Roxborough section of Philadelphia, Pa., was one of the Sailors who participated in the latest visit to the school.

"It is very rewarding to be forward deployed serving my country with the many missions we have performed here, including the counter-piracy and expeditionary warfare missions," said Corrigan. "Being able to take a few hours during the week and spend it with local children reminded me of my own children and how much they've sacrificed with their Dad being gone for so long. It's a great feeling to help the local Bahraini community for its continued support of our Navy, and to remember how thankful I am for my own children [whom] I deeply miss."

Sailors and Marines from ESG Two visit the school weekly, spending time with the children and participating in a wide range of activities.

"Community relations is a critical part of the Navy mission no matter where we are, not only is it personally rewarding, but it's also the right thing to do for some of the less fortunate in the local community," said Senior Chief Petty Officer Scott Vermeulen, community relations coordinator for SG Two.

"All Navy installations are inherently tied to the communities that surround them and doing projects like this one is a way to thank them for their cntinued support."
