    1st Marine Logistics Group

MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. — The success of any logistical operation heavily depends on the vehicles used to move troops, equipment or other supplies to their desired destination. When these vehicles break down, there is a group of Marines who can fix almost every problem.

Vehicle mechanics with Headquarters and Service Company, 1st Maintenance Battalion, Combat Logistics Regiment 15, 1st Marine Logistics Group, do their part to keep working vehicles available.

CLR-15 offers field level maintenance support, material distribution support, equipment fielding support and health care capability to the I Marine Expeditionary Force and specified Marine Aircraft Wing organizations. CLR-15 is also responsible for supporting all of 1st Maintenance Bn., 1st Supply Battalion, 1st Medical Battalion and Combat Logistics Companies 11 and 16 with logistical support.

"That's all we do on a daily basis," said Lance Cpl. Dylan Dean, a vehicle mechanic with Motor Transport platoon. "If it wasn't for us, the Marine Corps wouldn't be able to keep these vehicles going."

One of the missions of 1st Maintenance Bn. is to provide intermediate-level maintenance support, to include recovering wheeled and tracked vehicles damaged during training exercises. The vehicle is either saved or disposed of depending on how damaged it is. The Marines also provide general maintenance support for I MEF's ground equipment in order to improve and sustain a Marine Air-Ground Task Force's combat power.

The unit is also tasked with attaching additional transportation, engineering, medical and supply services.

These mechanics maintain all of CLR-15's vehicles to a certain degree, which support training and transportation at any time. Each mechanic comes from a different background. Some have experience in the field, while others get their first taste in Military Occupational Specialty school.

"(Fixing all these vehicles) is really nothing to me, since I was a mechanic before I joined the Marine Corps," said Dean, 20, from Mt. Airy, N.C. "The only reason I chose this job is because I love to fix vehicles."

While the Marines work on their tasked assignments, others observe and learn, trying to expand their knowledge of every aspect of the job.

"It's always good to learn something new," said Lance Cpl. Zachary Mace, vehicle mechanic with H&S Co., 1st Maintenance Bn., CLR-15, 1st MLG. "There are many things you need to know when working on these vehicles. It can be very easy to screw something up if don't know anything about it," said Mace, 21, from Rigby, Idaho.

H&S Co. has a motivated and dedicated group of Marines who are always willing to do whatever they can to provide the support CLR-15 needs. Whatever problems CLR-15 has with its vehicles, they know exactly who to contact for the job.
