USS KLAKRING — Four ships from four separate navies departed the port city of Brest, France to launch the at-sea phase of Exercise FRUKUS, June 23.
FRUKUS, which stands for the participating countries of France, Russia, the United Kingdom and the United States, is a naval exercise focusing on strengthening maritime partnerships and improving interoperability and communication between the nations. Participating U.S. forces include USS Klakring and members of the Commander, U.S. 6th Fleet staff.
Initial cooperative events will include a simulated counter-piracy exercise, collaborative gun shoots and visit, board, search and seizure evolutions.
During the outset of the ships' departure from Brest, simulated training went directly into effect as they encountered a series of staged, small boat encroachments. The simulation prompted the practice of communications between the ships, while coordinating strategies such as defensive weapons coverage and tactical maneuvering.
FRUKUS was created in 2003 to aid in talks between France, Russia, the United Kingdom, and the United States. Sponsorship rotates between the four navies with the lead nation traditionally providing a blend of professional and cultural activities. The principal aim is to increase interoperability by developing individual and collective maritime proficiencies of participating nations, as well as promoting friendship, mutual understanding and cooperation.
Klakring, a guided missile frigate homeported in Mayport, Fla., is on a scheduled six-month deployment to the U.S. 6th Fleet's area of responsibility.
