CONTINGENCY OPERATING BASE ADDER, Iraq — Soldiers of "Iron Horse" Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 121st Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division participated in the Asian Pacific American 5km walk/run, May 28.

Iron Horse Soldiers were already in formation as the sun rose above the eastern horizon before signing up to receive a T-shirt at the start point.

"It was fun, motivating and it was good to achieve something for a good cause," said Sgt. Liliana Rivera, a native of Fresno, Calif., from the "Iron Hammer" Battalion, human resources section. The 5K Walk began at 6 a.m. and the 5K Run started 30 minutes later. Light wind and soft sun provided ideal conditions for walkers and runners.

Staff Sgt. Albert Apodaca, an ammunition sergeant from San Diego, with the 121st Brigade Support Battalion, support operations section was the first Soldier from the unit to finish the run.

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month is celebrated in May to commemorate the contributions of people of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States. Congress passed a joint Congressional Resolution in 1978 to commemorate Asian American Heritage Week during the first week of May.

The 5K was an example of an event that celebrates diversity in the Army and was the first of many morale runs Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 121st Brigade Support Battalion plan to participate in throughout the deployment.
