ZORMAT, Afghanistan -- Cornerstones covered in decorative, traditional Afghan pink wrapping paper were placed on the foundations of a new school and the future education headquarters of Zormat, June 21, in Paktya province, Afghanistan.

Mehrabuldin Shafaq, director of education for Paktya province, at the shura meeting hosted by Zormat District Sub-Governor Gulab Shah spoke of hiring additional teachers within the next year

"I will fulfill my promise to bring more schools to Paktya," said Shafaq.

The new school and future Zormat District Education Center near the Zormat Bazaar is a promise that the Paktya government kept with Zormat people. More than 50 senior members of the provincial, district and village leadership, in addition to Zormat Afghan national police and Afghan national army members, attended the ceremony commemorating the beginning of construction.

Many of those who participated in the ceremony attended a shura following the groundbreaking ceremony. The main purpose of the shura was designed to further connect the provincial government to the local people.

"Education is the key to progress," said Mulawi Habibullah, Paktya director of reconciliation, highlighting one of the major topics of the shura meeting.

Deputy Governor Mangal's presence at the Shura helped to emphasize the Paktya government's dedication to the progress of Zormat.

"Just talking about construction at meetings is not good enough; we need more action," he said.

Mangal also spoke of the importance of security throughout the process.

"Zormat is the heart of Paktya, if we can maintain security here, we will maintain security for all of Paktya," Mangal stated.

Also in attendance for the day's events were Mulawi Khaliqdad, Chief of Shura Ulema, International Security Assistance Force from Paktya's Provincial Reconstruction Team and Air Force Lt. Col. Dan Moy, PRT Commander and Army Lt. Col. Don Cullison.
