LOGAR PROVINCE, Afghanistan - Combat outposts play a key role in battlefield coordination by providing a small base for troops to operate from while they are away from a larger forward operating base.

Living conditions on a combat outpost can be primitive. Soldiers on COP Bauguess often sleep in trucks and tents.

"There's nothing for us here, we have to build it up and make it liveable," said Pfc. Anthony Poventud, a Military policemen with 3rd Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 10th Mountain Division, "It helps the platoon get to know one another because we are building this together, we learn team-work".

Staff Sgt. Lauren Pearson, a medic from 710th Brigade Support Battalion who stays at Bauguess, works hard to build up the COP when she is not actively treating Soldiers and local Afghans, "I like building things. I'm good at it," said Pearson. "I'd prefer to be at a COP, I feel like I do my job out here."

Although living at a COP is difficult, the morale of Soldiers remains high.

"I enjoy being at the COPs," said 2nd Lt. Christopher Peters, MP platoon leader, 3rd BSTB. "We are not only building strong strategic relationships, but are also forming bonds between ourselves that will sustain us for our long haul here in Afghanistan."
