VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – Naval Air Station Oceana held a ceremony honoring Women's History Month at the base theater, March 26.
The ceremony highlighted both the past and current accomplishments of women with the theme of "Women taking the lead to save our planet."
"It's always good to take time out of our day to celebrate events like this that commemorate the accomplishments of our fellow Sailors," said Capt. J.D. Webb, executive officer, Naval Air Station Oceana.
The ceremony featured former mayor, Meyera E. Oberndorf, as the keynote speaker because of her accomplishments as the first female mayor of Virginia Beach.
"The Navy really is on the leading edge of making sure that everyone has an equal opportunity to make contributions to society," said Oberndorf. "I really applaud the contributions made to the community, and I know that it's all because of the folks that are here."
The ceremony concluded with a cake-cutting ceremony and a special meal at the base galley.
