Combined Task Force - 152 Conducts Exercise Stake Net

PERSIAN GULF - Ships and patrol craft from Australia, the United States and regional Gulf nations conducted a five-day exercise aimed at improving the abilities of coalition maritime forces to protect vital offshore infrastructure in the Persian Gulf.

Conducted by Combined Task Force - 152, Exercise Stake Net provided a valuable training opportunity and improved working relationships between regional partners.

"The aim of Exercise Stake Net was to enhance tactics and procedures for protecting maritime infrastructure, such as gas and oil installations, in addition to demonstrating the Combined Maritime Forces' commitment to working with regional nations to promote legitimate use of the maritime environment," said Royal Australian Navy Commodore Bruce Kafer, Commander, CTF 152. "I was particularly pleased that our regional members of the Combined Maritime Forces participated enthusiastically in this exercise. We will use the lessons learned to update the operational procedures for this coalition task force."

Coalition units participating in the exercise included the Australian frigate HMAS Warramunga, the U.S. guided-missile destroyer USS Milius, the Royal Bahraini frigate RBNS Sabha, as well as other various patrol boats and small craft.

CTF 152's primary roles are to conduct Maritime Security Operations throughout the Persian Gulf, coordinate exercises and focused operations with regional maritime forces, and be prepared to respond to a range of crises, including offshore oil spills.

Through cooperative activities, CTF 152 engages with Gulf nations, working with them to enhance their ability to deter illegal activities and defeat destabilizing activities in the Persian Gulf. CTF 152 operates in international waters with Gulf Cooperation Council nations and complements the security provided by GCC maritime forces in their own territorial waters.

MSO help develop security in the maritime environment and complement the counterterrorism and security efforts of regional nations. These operations seek to disrupt violent extremists' use of the maritime environment to transport personnel and weapons or serve as a venue for attack.
