CAMP TAJI, Iraq - Indiana National Guard Soldiers of the 1538th Transportation Company, of Elkhart, Ind., 419th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 10th Sustainment Brigade, make communication a first priority and a skill set that is held by all Soldiers at all levels within this company.

Since the 1538th currently runs missions on a day-to-day basis, good communication equipment is vital to mission accomplishment. This unit has taken a position to ensure that all Soldiers are trained to maintain communications equipment while in the motor pool, as well as while operating on a convoy.

Sgt. Austin Bontrager, a Goshen, Ind., native, who is one of the company's communications specialists, said "Every truck that leaves has a means of communication available and all the Soldiers have been trained to do on-the-spot corrections as they occur. This gives them confidence in their equipment and the mission."

The Mission commanders also play a key role in the communications of this company.

Bontrager said, "Communication and pre-combat inspections are critical to mission accomplishment. This is done with the Mission Commander on every mission we support. We have to ensure that all the equipment is operational."

The company is up to the challenge it faces in the communications arena and supports the sharing of knowledge and skills across the board.

Bontrager said, "Some days are more challenging than others. We see the same issues on different days, but in the end we always get it resolved. It is a good feeling to know that the hard work resulted in all the equipment working."

"I will help any Soldier or unit that needs help. We are all working together. We have a unity of effort, one team working together to get the job done over here."

The 1538th Trans. Co. deployed in early July 2008 and will be in Iraq until they leave in the summer of 2009.
