KABUL, Afghanistan - A Turkish Provincial Reconstructive Team in Wardak is providing training in modern policing methods, with the goal of increasing civilian police presence, improving public security and supporting the rule of law in Afghanistan.
Developing a strong law enforcement system is a key element toward the reconstruction and development efforts taking place all across Afghanistan. To date the PRT has constructed a fully furnished police training and education center in Maidan Shahr, Wardak which was inaugurated in January 2008.
The center has an initial capacity of 30 boarding and 80 non-boarding trainees for full-time training and education. Work to further increase the center's capacity is underway.
Since the center opened, 267 Afghan national police officers have successfully completed the training courses, with a further 40 currently under training. Fifteen Afghan students from the Wardak province were also enrolled in the Turkish police academy in Ankara for 5 years education in 2007 and 2008.
Turkey has also built a "model police station" in Maidan Shahr, to train ANP in the modern organization and management of a police station.
