VICTORY BASE COMPLEX, Iraq - Soldiers of the 180th Horizontal Construction Company (U.S. Army National Guard, Virginia), 54th Engineer Battalion, 555th Engineer Brigade had the opportunity to meet with their local Congressional representative while he was touring with a delegation from Washington D.C. Congressman Rob Wittman of the 1st District in Virginia, paid a visit to Victory Base Complex on Dec. 18, 2008 as part of a theater-wide tour that included stops in Kuwait, Iraq, Bahrain, and Afghanistan.

While on Victory Base Complex, the Congressional delegation toured the Mine Resistant Armor Protected Vehicle facility at Camp Liberty. They also visited a local unit's motor pool where they had a chance to operate the Buffalo and Meerkat Mine Clearing Vehicles. Afterwards, Congressman Gene Taylor, 4th District-Mississippi, treated all the guests to a shrimp gumbo luncheon.

The 180th Horizontal Construction Company had recently arrived to Baghdad when they were invited to attend lunch with Congressman Wittman. As part of the Virginia U.S. Army National Guard, the 180th is composed of Soldiers from all over the state, many of whom live in the 1st Congressional District. Being able to meet some of the Soldiers from his state was considered a treat for the Congressman Wittman. It was even discovered that one of the 180th's Soldiers, Specialist Rudolf Crowther, was good friends with Congressman Wittman's son.

Congressman Rob Wittman serves on the House Armed Services Committee where he oversees legislation that deals with military matters. On his visit to Victory Base Complex, he listened to commanders express their concerns on issues ranging from operational security for Iraq to needed parts for equipment. He did express enthusiasm on the progress made in Iraq since his visit last January and sees continued success in the coming year with the new elections.
