KABUL, Afghanistan - A local man was unintentionally killed and four others injured in an incident, Jan. 21, when International Security Assistance Forces came under attack from enemy fire and were forced to act in self defence. At the time of the incident, ISAF forces were conducting an intelligence-led operation in the Sangin area to locate and make safe enemy facilities. They had uncovered significant numbers of weapons, ammunition and improvised explosive device making equipment.

During the attack ISAF forces were fired upon from a number of surrounding positions, one of which was an adjacent compound. In self defence and in order to remove the threat, ISAF forces entered the compound that was being used by the enemy.

Inside the compound ISAF forces found five casualties; two males, one female and two children. The patrol gave immediate medical treatment to the casualties, and called for help from the ISAF doctor stationed at the local patrol base. Unfortunately, despite the doctor's best efforts, he could not save one of the men.

An ISAF helicopter transported the four injured people to an ISAF medical facility where they are stable and making a good recovery. The deceased man was left in situ in accordance with the request of a local elder.

ISAF sincerely regrets any injuries caused to civilians. ISAF soldiers are trained to take appropriate steps to minimize civilian casualties, whilst at the same time taking action to protect themselves when threatened.
