ST. GABRIEL, La. – Louisiana Army National Guard Recruiter Staff Sgt. Michael I. Davila of New Orleans and 20-year-old LANG recruit Pvt. Crystal M. Collins of Dutchtown, La., gave the students of East Iberville High School in St. Gabriel, La., a lesson in rock climbing during their physical education class, Jan. 15.

Davila chose the climbing wall because he knew the students would enjoy the challenge and it promotes something that is very important in the military: physical fitness. It is also a great recruiting tool.

"Since the rock wall has been very popular in the past, I knew the teenagers would enjoy being competitive and having fun with their classmates. It is a great way to show them that there are plenty of fun opportunities in the Guard," said Davila.

"Most of these kids know very little about the National Guard, so I spend a lot of time with them to show the positive aspects of this great organization," he added.

Davila recruits at the school and Principal Maria Delouise has given him a permanent hall pass because she feels that having Soldiers walking through the school is a good example for the students to follow.

"I have received a tremendous amount of support from the school's administration," said Davila. "The principal's daughter, an active duty Army officer, is currently deployed to Iraq and Ms. Delouise feels that it is her duty to expose her students to the military."
