DIWANIYA, Iraq – The 8th Iraqi Army Division hosted a promotion ceremony for its commander at the headquarters in Diwaniya, Jan. 11.
Newly promoted Lt. Gen. Ali Salih Farhood Oothman had his new rank placed upon his uniform by Gen. Nesir Abadi, IA deputy chief of staff.
"Lt. Gen. Oothman is very loyal to Iraq and has dedicated his life to serve his country. He has [proven] himself as a good leader and capable of fighting the insurgency and terrorism. He has brought security to the area," said Abadi.
Maj. Gen. Michael Oates, Multi-National Division – Center commander, also participated in the promotion ceremony.
"I'm honored to be here to represent the coalition at this great celebration and promotion. It's very clear that the government of Iraq has chosen to promote one of its greatest general officers," said Oates during his speech.
"It's clear that your Soldiers love you. The very best leaders are the ones that serve their Soldiers and their people. I respect you so much as a leader and think this is an appropriate promotion," continued Oates.
"It's clear from my travels throughout the [8th IA] Division area that the people of Iraq respect the Army and they know they are protected. This is due to your leadership. I've enjoyed our partnership and look forward to our continued partnership," said Oates.
Oates presented Oothman with a wooden statue of an eagle during the ceremony and Abadi presented him with a ceremonial sword.
Abadi highlighted many of Oothman's accomplishments and his dedication to the people of Iraq and the country's security.
Oothman expressed his warm gratitude to all who attended and emphasized that the IA is also celebrating their 88th Anniversary.
His Soldiers took turns offering congratulations as they danced around and chanted praises to their commander during the celebration, adding a festive mood to the gathering.
Many of the 8th IA Div. Soldiers expressed their pride in their commander and their service to their country and people.
