NORFOLK, Va. – The Street Smart Program is bringing driving safety to the forefront of Sailor's minds, by reminding them of easy ways to decrease the chances of being injured in a car accident.

Every year, car accidents cause countless deaths and are one of the leading causes of fatalities among service members in the U.S., according to the Stay Alive For Education Program. SAFE created its Street Smart training classes to help educate service members in easy precautions that can help save lives but are often overlooked. A seminar for the Street Smart campaign was held on Naval Station Norfolk, Nov. 19, and was taught by professional paramedics and fire rescue crewmen who have seen the results of these accidents first hand.

"We talk about the dangers of drinking and driving, of not wearing seatbelts and making other poor choices," said Vince Easevoli, a paramedic for Miami-Dade County, and an instructor for the course. "We also talk about the process that we as paramedics go through in getting you from the accident to the emergency room."

Easevoli and his partner Ronnie Garcia informed Sailors on statistics that prove that using simple safety measures can greatly increase one's chances for survival in a car accident.

"Use common sense if you're going to go out. By all means have a good time, but do it smartly," said Easevoli. "Every time you get into a vehicle it doesn't matter what seat you're in, have your seat belt on every single time. If you take simple precautions, such as wearing your seat belt, it'll stack the odds in your favor to make sure that you're not seriously injured or killed."

During the seminar other information was given out that highlighted many other ways that one can ensure safety and survivability during a traumatic accident.

The program holds training seminars worldwide throughout the year. For information on Street Smart and SAFE visit www.safeprogram.com.
