CAMP ATTERBURY, Ind. – Soldiers from the 205th Infantry Brigade at Camp Atterbury brought lessons out of the classroom and into the hands of high school students from Winchester Community High School earlier this week.

The Soldiers taught students from a freshman history class and senior sociology class to use geography and mapping skills they learned in school.

Staff Sgt. Michael Murphy, a Soldier in charge of land navigation for the 205th's 3rd Battalion, 338th Regiment Training Support, said that working with high school students was motivating and fun.

"It was cool working with the students," he said. "They are out here to learn and have fun, so that makes our job easier and more fun."

Upon arriving at the navigation training site, the students divided into groups of three to five students. Instructors from the 205th then teamed up with the groups and gave a brief class about land navigation.

"The students were very motivated to learn and grasped what we were teaching them very quickly," said Murphy.

Students practiced plotting points and reading a map before they were sent out to complete the land navigation course. After practicing, the group of students broke into teams as they navigated the course. Each team was accompanied by a Soldier from the 205th.

"The students worked together to complete the land nav. course," Murphy said. "We were just there to help them if they got lost or had problems."

Sgt. 1st Class Rich Bement, a member of the 3-338th MP team, said that the navigation course was a good setup to run the necessary amount of people through.

"The course is a system of several courses that provides the ability to easily set up a pace count," he said, referring to the method where one must know how many paces it takes to walk 100 meters in order to measure ground distance.

"Because of that, we were able to get a lot of people through even though we had a revised training time," he said.

While typical land navigation training at Camp Atterbury for mobilizing Soldiers takes a couple of days, the 205th only had a couple of hours to work with the high school students.

"We were teaching skill level-one abilities that we have learned and honed for 25-plus years," he said. "We were able to relay our knowledge in such a quick time because of this."

On top of teaching students to use maps and compasses to find locations, Sgt. Richard Olmeda, a nonlethal weapons instructor for the 205th, said that the day was good for students to ask general questions about the military.

"It was a good change to work with students and give them advice or answers to their questions," he said.

Chuckie Lee, a freshman at Winchester High School, said the field trip was a good opportunity to not only practice geography skills, but to see how Soldiers prepare for deployments.

"It's been really interesting seeing how Soldiers live and train," he said. "Today has been a fun day."

In addition to completing the land navigation course and talking to Soldiers, the students tackled one of the fitness courses here and took a bus tour of the installation and surrounding community.
