Senior NCOs Bond While Helping School Open New Wing

MANAMA, Bahrain - More than 20 sailors from six different commands at Naval Support Activity, Bahrain participated in a Community Relations project at Sacred Heart School in Isa Town, Bahrain, July 24-26.

Twenty-two chief, senior chief and master chief petty officers from NSA, and its tenant commands washed buildings and moved furniture to help prepare for the opening of a newly constructed wing at the school.

"This is the kind of thing that builds camaraderie," said Master Chief Petty Officer Daniel Brindley, senior enlisted advisor for Naval Security Force. "Coming together with people we don't usually see
gives us the opportunity to get to know each other while doing good things."

The COMREL is the first of several the U.S. Navy has planned to support the school, including recurring projects in the fall where Sailors will serve as teacher's aides and help with music classes and calisthenics.

"The people from the Navy have been asking us if they could help our school for a few years," said Sister Grace, the school's vice principal. "We had always declined but we are glad they asked again because we really need the help."

The U.S. Navy actively seeks new opportunities to volunteer in Bahrain and has 13 commands actively participating in COMREL efforts.

"I was glad I had the chance to jump in on this with the other Chiefs," said Senior Chief Steven Harvey the Operations Chief for the Emergency Management Office's Emergency Response Team. "The word was out that they needed a hand with this, and that's what Seabees do."

The Sacred Heart School was established in 1953 and is affiliated with Bahrain's Sacred Heart Church. It provides learning for primary and secondary education under the London Examinations General certificate of Education and serves more than 1,500 students of 28 different nationalities.
