KABUL, Afghanistan — Twenty hospital beds and an operating table have significantly improved the medical facilities for local people at Tarin Kowt Hospital in Uruzgan province, southern Afghanistan.

ISAF medical personnel donated the equipment after learning that the old hospital beds were in very poor condition.

After the equipment was delivered, ISAF and Afghan hospital staff members worked together to ensure that it was immediately assembled and available for use.

"It's hard to maintain complex hospital equipment, but these beds will last a long time," said Maj. Mark Friebel, a Dutch ISAF medical officer based in Tarin Kowt.

Importantly, an ISAF surgeon is mentoring an Afghan surgeon at Tarin Kowt Hospital. This support will help ensure the future of effective medical assistance for local Afghans.

ISAF medical staff are also providing ongoing training and assistance to local Afghans responsible for the maintenance and repair of all Tarin Kowt Hospital's equipment.
