KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan officials and International Security Assistance Force troops, including U.S. Marines with Special Purpose Marine Air Ground Task Force — Afghanistan, completed a project to improve the drainage system for the district center bazaar in Golestan, Farah province, April 3.
The project, one of several for the district, was initiated after a request from local community leaders because the bazaar did not have an adequate drainage system. Previously, standing water would cause unsanitary conditions in the bazaar and create hazards for local drivers.
The $14,000 project employed 50 Afghan civilians, providing them with an alternative income to harvesting poppy in nearby districts.
"There are not a lot of jobs, and sometimes people will seek the wrong type of employment," said Qasim Khan, the district sub-governor.
The improved drainage conditions in the bazaar have also ensured that local Afghans can now drive safely through the area, especially after rainfall.
Importantly, the improved bazaar conditions are expected to bring increased commerce from outlying villages in the district.
"The people are happy that ISAF is here and that projects have focused on the bazaar. This is because it is the center of the community," said Khan.
Future Afghan and ISAF projects being planned for the district include the distribution of 85 tons of wheat, the donation of live chickens, setting up a local radio station, and adding solar-powered street lamps and public restrooms in the bazaar. Each of these initiatives is based on Afghan needs and cooperation with local officials.
