KABUL, Afghanistan — The commander of the International Security and Assistance Force Feyzabad Provincial Reconstruction Team, Col. Peter Utsch, and the medical company commander, Major Ludger G., presented an auxiliary power unit to the gynaecological clinic of Feyzabad Provincial Hospital on April 11.
On a daily basis, the physicians at Feyzabad hospital treat patients with diverse injuries and illnesses. The physicians also perform surgeries under difficult conditions, sometimes without the necessary anaesthetic equipment at their disposal.
When the medical soldiers of the Feyzabad PRT learned of the physicians' requirement for anaesthetic equipment, they decided to help the hospital. The solution involved St. John's Ambulance Brigade and the PRT Chaplaincy Service donating approximately 12,000 Euro towards the purchase of a "compressor machine," or auxiliary power unit.
Having an auxiliary power unit will ensure that the clinic's surgical department will finally be able to use its anaesthetic equipment.
Chief physician, Dr. Nadjula, and the director of the Department of Public Health, Dr. Momin Jalay, were delighted when Col. Utsch presented the power unit to the hospital.
"With the help of the Provincial Reconstruction Team, the hospital's medical care capability has significantly improved," Dr Jalay said.
Dr. Nadjula said that the hospital's physicians would complete training with the new equipment.
Patients in the gynaecological unit could then have surgery under a general anaesthetic, he stated.
The German PRT has supported the hospital many times in the past. The training of Afghan physicians, helping the hospital procure equipment and the treating of emergencies were "priceless" projects that continued to provide benefits for Afghan people living in the local area, Dr. Jalay said.
