BAGHDAD – During the monthlong Ramadan celebration, it is tradition for many Iraqis to distribute food to those less fortunate as an act of charity during the religious celebration.

Soldiers from the 3rd Platoon, Company A, 1st Battalion, 21st Infantry Regiment, "Gimlets," 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, "Warrior," 25th Infantry Division, Multi-National Division - Baghdad assisted the 4th Battalion, 24th Brigade, 6th Iraqi army division distribute humanitarian aid packages, in Nassir Wa Salam, east of Baghdad, Sept. 15, 2008.

The packages were to help families supplement their end of Ramadan celebration. More than 200 Iraqi citizens were given food and supplies under the leadership of IA Lt. Khalid.

"It's good to see the progress that [coalition forces] and [Iraqi security forces] have made working together in this area," he said.

As the IA soldiers called off names, and residents were given a voucher then they made their way to the food drop.

There was a great amount of thanks given to the Gimlets, IA and the Iraqi police. This event helped solidify the residents' trust in their local ISF units and their ability to keep them safe, Khalid said.

Security was a top concern for this event.

"This is a high visibility event in which the ISF and CF need to be on their best game with the entire local nations in the area. The enemy could cause a panic in the area if there is a successful attack on unarmed civilians," said Staff Sgt Derek Wood, a native of Kennesaw, Ga., and Gimlet platoon sergeant.
