FORWARD OPERATING BASE DELTA, Iraq – Leaders from El Salvador's Cuscatlán Battalion, Rotation X and XI, gathered at Bunker 7 for a quick reaction force demonstration, Aug. 23, 2008.

The demonstration gave the soldiers on Rotation X the opportunity to show the incoming soldiers and Salvadoran media the high level of training they achieved in their six months here and what Rotation XI should strive to accomplish.

A fake explosion initiated the training demonstration. Soldiers reacted rapidly, establishing security and caring for the wounded. The soldiers displayed the importance and success of their training in Iraq with each task performed.

The Salvadorans don't have armored vehicles to train on before deployment, said Capt. Alejandro Gutierrez, assistant operations officer, Cuscatlán Battalion, Rotation X. The Salvadoran soldiers train in unarmored Jeeps and use the knowledge gained and standards developed by previous rotations to make their training more effective.

The soldiers train extensively in theater to adjust to the differences between El Salvador's and Iraq's environments.

"The important thing is what they learned in Iraq," said Capt. Jose Escalante, Rotation XI assistant human resources officer. He said the demonstration was a good way to see what they learned in the classroom.

"It was very clear and according to the highest standards of training," said Capt. Jose Moraga, who supervises transfer of authority operations.

Gutierrez said he and his fellow Rotation X leaders were given a similar demonstration when they arrived in February. Rotation X completed more than 100 missions safely, but he said the troops realized the threat was always there "There were no major incidents, but we were ready at all times," he said.
