Meet Spc. Yasmine Yakoubi, a native of Richmond, Virginia. She is an air defense battle systems operator with the Headquarters Support Company, 29th Infantry Division. Yakoubi was deployed to Ustka, Poland, in support of Immediate Response 24, May 8, 2024.
Yakoubi is a college student of Moroccan heritage with hopes of becoming an attorney. Her life path is not yet set, but the Army gives her the space and security to grow. She says her current job strikes a good balance and allows her to use her brain without feeling overworked.
“I’m here in Poland to defend the skies and make sure that everything that is within our air space is noted or reported,” said Yakoubi. “I’d never get to do this job if it wasn’t for the Army.”
Spc. Yakoubi is on the frontlines, watching the skies for any potential incursions into controlled air space.
“This is my first major exercise,” said Yakoubi. “To go live in a real-world environment is intense but exciting.”
DEFENDER is the Dynamic Employment of Forces to Europe for NATO Deterrence and Enhanced Readiness and is a U.S. European Command scheduled, U.S. Army Europe and Africa conducted exercise that consists of Saber Strike, Immediate Response, and Swift Response. DEFENDER 24 is linked to NATO’s Steadfast Defender exercise, and DoD’s Large Scale Global Exercise, taking place from 28 March to 31 May. DEFENDER 24 is the largest U.S. Army exercise in Europe and includes more than 17,000 U.S. and 23,000 multinational service members from more than 20 Allied and partner nations, including Croatia, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Georgia, Hungary, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Moldova, Netherlands, North Macedonia, Norway, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden and the United Kingdom.
