Cmdr. Lynch is commanding the elite pacific warriors as USS Halsey (DDG 97) heads into their fourth month of deployment in the Indo-Pacific. This month is especially poignant for Lynch as she will be celebrating her first mother's day away from her son.

"This job, much like being a mom, is both extremely challenging AND rewarding. My wife, Cmdr. Brittany Kaluscak, is the executive officer aboard USS O'Kane (DDG 77) and our service to our country is very important to us. Although our son is too young to understand, we work hard to ensure he will share the same pride in his country, and pride for his moms in the service."

The ship's executive officer (XO), Cmdr. Lawton, can frequently be overheard telling the crew that moms make for great XO's.

"My children know a berthing inspection and we will absolutely institute restriction at home when warranted."

This is her second mother's day spent deployed from her children and she credits her success to her husband and the network she relies on in order to do the job she loves.

"It takes a village to support a Navy mom and mine never ceases to come through. I come from three generations of women who served going back to WWII - moms make great warfighters, and the women who pull it off today are able to do so by standing on the shoulders of the giants who came before us."

Command Master Chief Oonyu is no stranger to deployment or time spent away from her family. As Mother's Day approaches, she reflects upon the influence of the mothers that are both at home and on board.

"When I think of military moms, I envision my mother and grandmother - who lived courageously in times of war and uncertainty. The mothers that serve in today's military are cut from the same cloth; they share the heartaches and joys of motherhood, the same innate toughness and ferocious spirit of generations past. I am proud to stand alongside my Sisters-in-Arms as they lead and strengthen our military."
