Sgt. Kimberly Boyce, water purification specialist, 401st Quartermaster Detachment, Lock Haven, Pa., cranks a valve Nov. 7 releasing water that will channel water away from the Redfern Housing complex, Rockaway, N.Y. Residents at the complex have been without power since Hurricane Sandy hit the northeast last week. Despite the effects of a second large storm, citizen-soldiers removed water from three buildings at the complex. The unit deployed into the area in direct support of the Federal Emergency Management Agency, state and local officials.
