U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Ray Bailey, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit chaplain, presents a young Filipina student with a new backpack just weeks before the beginning of a new school year at San Marcos Elementary School here. The Marines and sailors of the MEU conducted a community relations event and donated much needed clothing and supplies to the school, which educates approximately 600 children from the area. The event was the first of several of its kind scheduled throughout the Philippines as part of Balikatan 2009. Balikatan '09 is an annual bilateral training event which focuses heavily on similar humanitarian projects which allow both Republic of Philippines and U.S. Armed Forces an opportunity to work together to enhance the health and welfare of Filipinos in communities where assistance is most needed.
