Rear Adm. Rich A. Brown, commander, Naval Service Training Command (NSTC), talks to Navy Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets at the Naval Station Great Lakes Marina June 17. The more than 120 cadets, from NJROTC Area 3 units across seven Midwest states, were attending the 2014 NJROTC Leadership Academy June 14-21. During their time with the sailboats the cadets learned teamwork, discipline and leadership traits, as well as how to sail. The academy each year trains cadets to be the senior leaders of their units for the upcoming high school year. The NJROTC citizenship development program, overseen by Brown and his NSTC staff, headquartered on Naval Station Great Lakes, was established in 1964 and instills service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment in students in secondary educational institutions. Today, there are more than 580 units at high schools and military academies across the United States, including units in Japan and Guam. (U.S. Navy photo by Scott A. Thornbloom/Released)
