With the closure of the runway at its main operating base, the majority of the E-3A Component’s fleet has functioned out of Turkey, Greece, Italy and Norway. The Component’s organic ability to perform from these locations has allowed NATO AWACS to sustain its on-going missions to include Operation Afghan Assist and, more recently, flights over Poland and Romania. The runway restoration project at NATO Air Base Geilenkirchen, Germany, which started in May 2014, is nearing completion.
