Maj. Gen. Anthony Ierardi (left), commanding general, 1st Cavalry Division, awards the Purple Heart to Capt. Kenneth Spoon, the facilities and construction manager for the division engineer section, Feb. 21 at Fort Hood, Texas. Spoon sustained injuries while performing a route clearance patrol in Afghanistan July 2, 2011. "We had some enemy intelligence," Spoon said. "We went out and found a few (improvised explosive devices). We got hit by one IED with a complex attack, stopped the ambush, and moved to another location. About 45 minutes later, we got hit by a second IED, immediately with a second complex ambush," recalled the native of Benton, La.
